Provides short-term, temporary care and supervision to individuals with developmental disabilities who are unable to care for themselves, in order to give relief to the primary caregivers who normally provide ongoing support. The service is designed to ensure the participant’s safety, well-being, and continuity of care while caregivers take a break or are temporarily unavailable.
Respite services may be provided in various settings, including the participant’s home, a DHS-licensed group home, or other approved community-based settings. In certain circumstances, alternative settings such as hotels may be used when other options have been exhausted and are approved by the State.
Services may be delivered on an hourly basis, for partial hours, for full-day periods without overnight support, or for full-day periods with overnight care, depending on the needs of the participant and their family. The goal of respite care is to support family stability, prevent caregiver burnout, and ensure continuity of safe, person-centered care in a supportive environment.
